Making Miller

As Jamaicans say, “What is fi yuh, cyan un-fi yuh.” And so it would seem a life of modelling was destined for Canadian-Ghanaian model Alyshia Miller. While the world may now know her as, Jamaican sprinter, Asafa Powell’s fiancée, Miller has been establishing herself in the modelling world since she was scouted in 2012.

She says it all happened by accident. Despite having ignored her own requests from scouts, she made a serendipitous visit to a Canadian model agency to support a friend- and the rest is history. Now, this former nurse/physicist continues to build an impressive portfolio that includes appearances in Essence magazine, and work with clients such as Lululemon, Maybelline, and MAC.

Her story started in Accra, Ghana. She moved to Canada at the age of 10 and followed a sports trajectory, running the 400 metres and relays. But it was a chance visit to Elmer Olson Model Management, with a friend, when Elmer Olson himself happened to be in office, and offered her a different path. This was the turning point. She is now based in New York, where she is signed to Women/360 Management. She is also signed to LA Models in LA, and The Hive in London. “Most girls dream of being a fashion model and being in New York, and I get to do that daily,” Miller says. She took some time to sit down with MoDA Mag, and share some of her dreams for the future, her travelling essentials and why she loves London.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON AND WHY?

My style icon would be Zendaya. Whether she’s rocking the baggy boyish look, jeans and a tee--casual vibe, or stunning red carpet wear- she pulls off every look so effortlessly, while remaining captivating and enigmatic. She makes her own rules and never comes across as being overly confident.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST PERK OF BEING A MODEL?

The best part about being a model is the opportunity to travel. Travelling is the best antidote to ignorance. Modelling affords me a chance to learn about different cultures, styles, traditions, and architecture everywhere that I go.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CITY?

My favourite city would be London. I love the vibe there. It reminds me a lot of New York, but at the same time it doesn’t feel too hectic. The old-style architecture captivates me each time. It’s very British and proper, but is also very modern in so many ways.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

The highlight has been expanding my journey...From just being a Canadian-based model, to being an international model-signed worldwide. Also booking large campaign jobs, and commercials et cetera-it has been surreal! Working with brands like Olay, Saks Fifth Avenue, Avon, Macy’s, Lululemon, MAC Cosmetics, Cover Girl, Maybelline, and so many more, has made 2017 an amazing year for me so far!

WHICH DESIGNER WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH?

One Designer I would love to work with would be Tom Ford. Everything about Tom Ford screams timeless, sexy and elegant.
