The Girl and the Magpie’s pieces of jewellery are made in plain brass, which means they will not loose their colour. But over time brass, just as copper and silver, will slowly tarnish. A brass jewel will deepen and darken in colour, and over time it will not exactly look like the original shiny piece anymore.
Some tips to slow down tarnishing, avoid stains and clean your brass jewellery:
- When you are not wearing them, keep your jewels in a cloth or in a bag: air, humidity - and sea salt (the worst!) accelerate oxidation.Avoid water, especially seawater, sweat and all chemical products. Do not wear your jewellery in the shower, the swimming pool, the sea, or when using chemicals (like cleaning products). Whenever possible, use alcohol as hand sanitizer. Avoid wearing
- Brass jewellery when doing sports (sweat).
- Put your jewellery as the last piece of your outfit, after your skin has already absorbed your cream, lotion, perfume,...
After taking off your jewellery, give it a gentle wipe with a dry and soft piece of cloth or tissue, removing any leftover of lotion, make up, sweat, ... it only takes a minute!Tips to clean your brass jewellery:
You can use lime juice (or blend lime peels with a bit of water, strain the mixture, and use this “juice”)
- Apply on the jewel or dip the jewel in the juice
- Wait 5-10 minutes
- Rinse with cold water
- Dry properly (most important part!)
- Scrub smoothly with a dry and soft piece of cloth.
For the removal of stains or advanced oxidation, you can use an old toothbrush and rub in a mixture of baking soda and lime juice.
OR
You can use a product specifically developed to clean copper, brass and bronze, available in all major hardware stores (like “Brasso”).Should this product get into small irregularities of your jewel's surface, remove it using a soft old toothbrush, a cotton bud, or even a coton yarn the way you use dental floss.
